LANCASTER – Thanks to a strong start from pitcher Garrett Schilling, the Lancaster JetHawks did not need a comeback Tuesday in a 5-4 win over the Inland Empire 66ers at The Hangar.
The JetHawks picked up their fourth straight win.
Rehabbing righty Matt Harvey started for the 66ers but did not factor in the decision.
Schilling (5-4) struck out a career-high 11 batters in six innings, allowing just two runs (one earned). It was the third start with 10 or more strikeouts for Schilling this season.
Lancaster (9-4, 43-38) took the lead after Schilling finished the top of the sixth inning with the game tied. In the bottom of the frame, Taylor Snyder untied the game with a two-out single off of Denny Brady (3-8). Snyder drove in a pair, and an error allowed another run to score.
The JetHawks held on after going up by three runs, as Inland Empire (4-9, 30-52) scored twice in the final three innings. Tommy Doyle was charged with an unearned run in the ninth inning but picked up his 14th save.
Lancaster did not trail in Tuesday’s win, making it just the second victory the JetHawks have not had to come from behind in since the All-Star Break. Sean Bouchard got the scoring started with a two-run home run in the first inning against Matt Harvey. Those were the only runs allowed by the former MLB All-Star in four innings.
Here’s the box score.
The JetHawks improve to 9-4 in the Second Half and sit atop the standings going into Wednesday’s series finale. Lancaster goes for a third sweep this season on July 3.
The three-game set wraps up with Lancaster’s Independence Day Celebration and Fireworks Wednesday night. Lefty Ryan Rolison (2-4) gets the ball for Lancaster opposite Cooper Criswell (1-6). First pitch from The Hangar is 6:35 p.m.
