On Sept. 5, 1912, the Board of Supervisors of the County of Los Angeles voted to create the Los Angeles County Free Library. Since its founding 100 years ago, the County library has grown from a collection of fifty books in one room at a residence in Willowbrook to over 7 million books and other items. We have welcomed over 11 million visitors and provided more than 2 million computer sessions to County Library users.
“As we approach this milestone looking ahead to the 21st century and beyond, we’d like to reflect on the past 100 years marked by our commitment to ensure that everyone has access to information and technology and to provide an inviting and safe space for the community to come together at our libraries,” stated County Librarian Margaret Donnellan Todd. “We invite the public to come and join in our local Centennial birthday celebrations at each of our County libraries on September 8,” adds Todd.
Visit the library web site at colapublib.org and view facts about the County Library’s 100 year history with a historic photograph. The photos are linked to our centennial history page that will contain 100 historical facts about the library.
By clicking on our Centennial logo or “See contests and events” the public can follow along with our celebration and join our “100 Things Challenge.” Take a picture of 100 things, a 100 second video, or a picture of your favorite centenarian, post it on the internet and send us the link. We will acknowledge adult, teen and child entrants. Or give us your three favorite book titles and authors and we’ll compile a list of the top 100 favorite books in the County of Los Angeles.
So come follow along with us while we celebrate our first 100 years. For more information, call (562) 940-8559.
