The Master’s College women’s basketball team got back to its winning ways Saturday night by beating San Diego Christian (10-8, 1-4 GSAC) 75-43 in El Cajon.

With the win, the ninth-ranked Lady Mustangs’ 2013-14 season record improves to 17-4 and 5-1 in GSAC play.

“I think a game like tonight’s is always dangerous…a trap game between Westmont and Vanguard,” commented Lady Mustang head coach Dan Waldeck. “I thought we responded to what we learned at Westmont. Our bench posted a lot of valuable minutes tonight, and it was their focus and energy that put the game away.”

Despite trailing the Hawks 3-2 just 29 seconds into play, the Lady Mustangs controlled the court for the entirety of the evening. Highlighting the first half was a 12-point run that brought the score to 19-7 with 9:57 left to play. TMC’s red-hot offense put up another 17 points in the final 9 minutes, and was complimented by its stingy defense who only allowed 8 more points.

With a 36-15 lead at the half, Jacquelyn Marshall (San Clemente, CA) led all competitors with 17 points and 9 rebounds. The Lady Mustangs went 12-28 (42%) from the field, 3-12 (25%) behind the arc, and 9-11 (81%) on free throws. Notably, TMC’s offense put up 18 points in the paint during the first stanza.

In the second stanza, Waldeck called up his reserves who continued TMC’s domination without skipping a beat.  Stacie Perez (San Fernando, CA) gave the Lady Mustangs a 35-point lead, their largest of the night, by sinking a three-pointer with 28 seconds left to play. In an act of desperation, San Diego answered back with a three-pointer, bringing the final score to 75-43.

At the end of the night, Marshall posted a double-double by scoring 21 points and yanking 10 boards. Marshall also put up a game-high 4 blocks and 3 steals. Zoe Scott (Spokane, WA) scored 11 points while Megan Lindsley (Vancouver, WA) posted 10 more.

Factoring into an overall team effort, TMC’s bench posted 27 points.

Now, the Lady Mustangs look to Tuesday where they will have the daunting task of taking down Vanguard, the NAIA’s first-ranked team.

“It’s going to take mental focus and preparation to get ready for vanguard on Tuesday,” further assed Waldeck. “They are ranked number one for a reason. They are extremely well coached, efficient, and talented. It should be a great game between two great teams.”

Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. at Bross Court in The MacArthur Center.
