The Trinity Classical Academy boys basketball team came up a little short in the championship game of the CIF Southern Section Division 6 playoffs.
The Knights lost to top-seeded Rio Hondo Prep, 47-40, at Mater Dei High School on Saturday morning. The Trinity boys were playing for the first CIF championship in school history.
Ryan Brooks scored a team-high 12 points for Trinity, but he was the only player in double figures.
Even though the Trinity boys lost the CIF championship game, their season isn’t over. They will play Tranquility in the first round of the CIF Southern California Division V regional playoffs on Wednesday. Trinity is seeded ninth in the Southern California Regionals.
Tranquility, from the Central Section, is the eighth seed in the Division V playoffs. The winner will play top-seeded Horizon Christian on Saturday.
In high school baseball, Valencia lost to Harvard-Westlake, 1-0, in the semifinals of the Easton Tournament. Jack Flaherty pitched a no-hitter for Harvard-Westlake.
Saugus lost to Chaminade, 12-7, in the other semifinal game in the Easton Tournament. Harvard-Westlake will play Chaminade for the tournament championship on Tuesday.
In high school softball, Hart lost to Chatsworth, 7-6, in the first round of the Hart Tournament at Central Park.
The Golden Valley softball team lost to El Camino Real, 8-1, in the first round of the Hart tournament. Emily Smith homered for Golden Valley’s only run.
Burbank, Highland, Camarillo and Chatsworth are in the semifinals of the Hart Tournament.
In the NBA, the Lakers beat the visiting Atlanta Hawks, 99-98, and have a .500 record for the first time since Dec. 28.
Kobe Bryant scored 34 points including the game-winning basket with nine seconds to play. The Lakers have a 30-30 record and are 2 ½ games behind the Houston Rockets and Utah Jazz for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
The Clippers lost to the Oklahoma City Thunder, 108-104, in a match-up of two of the top teams in the Western Conference.
Chris Paul scored 26 points and had eight assists in the loss.
In baseball spring training, the Dodgers beat the Indians, 5-1. Josh Beckett pitched three shutout innings and struck out three for the Dodgers.
In the NHL, the Kings are home for a game against the Nashville Predators tonight. The Kings are coming off a 5-2 loss to the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday.
