The College of the Canyons track and field program was well represented at this year’s California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Southern California Heptathlon/Decathlon Championships, with sophomores Jasmine Hall and Zachary Larson both qualifying to compete at the state championship event next month.

The event was held April 4-5 at Cerritos College in Norwalk, with 18 student-athletes competing on the women’s side and 10 on the men’s side.

Hall finished second overall with 4,704 points, highlighted by a first place finish in the shot put (10.94m). She also took second in the javelin (35.14m) and third in the 100m (15.04).

The sophomore was also fourth in both the high jump (1.60m) and 200m (25.70) events. She rounded out the day with a fifth place mark in the long jump (4.93m) and seventh in the 800m (2:37.44).

Those totals trailed only Juanita Webster of Cerritos who won the heptathlon with 5,471 points.

Larson’s day was paced by a second place mark of 3.95m in the pole vault and a fourth place time of 52.61 in the 400m.

Elsewhere, Larson was fifth in the 1,500m (4:57.28) and discus (28.87m) events. He also earned a sixth place result in the javelin (37.63m) and 110h (16.43).

He was seventh in the 100m (12.06) and shot put (9.23m) and eighth in both the long jump (5.61m) and high jump (1.61m) events.

The 5,466 points accumulated by Larson placed him fifth in the field, more than 250 points ahead of the sixth place finisher.

Hall and Larson will now move on for a chance to compete at the 2017 CCCAA Track & Field State Championships hosted by American River College on May 19-20, in Sacramento.
