LANCASTER – In non-conference action, the University of Antelope Valley Pioneers (6-3) swept their doubleheader with the Firebirds of the University of Saint Katherine (5-14), winning game one, 4-1, and taking game two, 12-6 on Tuesday, at the Best of the West Softball Complex.
Game one: UAV scored early, adding one run in the second inning, but the Firebirds would answer with a single run in the third to tie things up, 1-1. The Pioneers would continue to score early by adding two more runs in the bottom half of the third, and that would prove to be enough as they would go on to win, 4-1.
UAV junior pitcher Ashley Adkins (Lincoln, CA) (3-1) went all the way, allowing just one run and two hits, walking one and striking out three to earn her third win of the season.
Senior catcher Alyssa Benally (Bullhead City, AZ) finished 2-for-3, scored two runs and knocked one in, and junior catcher Amber Adkins (Lincoln, CA) and sophomore third baseman Rosie Aguirre (Ventura, CA) each added one hit and RBI.
Game two: The Pioneers controlled the game early, scoring two runs in the opening inning while holding Saint Katherine scoreless during the next three innings.
The Firebirds would get back into the game however and added two runs to tie things up in the top of the fifth, but after plating five run in each the fifth and sixth innings, UAV would go on to win comfortably, 12-6.
Freshman UAV starter Mackenzie Potter (Lancaster, CA) (1-0) earned her first victory of the season, allowing three runs on six hits, walking one and striking out two across 5-1/3 innings, and Ashley Adkins closed things out and allowed three runs, two earned, six hits, one walk, and struck out one in 1-2/3 innings of work.
Ashley Adkins led all Pioneers with three hits and also added two RBI and scored a run, senior shortstop Kathy Perscheid (San Lorenzo, CA) and senior center fielder Erika Romero (La Mirada, CA) each finished 2-for-4, Aguirre finished 1-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored, and sophomore designated player Cheyla-ann Valdez-asato (Ewa Beach, HI) went 1-for-4 with two RBI.
Next games: Coached by Steve Harrington, the Pioneers remain at home to host Arizona Christian for a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, March 14, beginning at 5:00 p.m. PST on Field 5 of the Best of the West Softball Complex in Palmdale.
