[KHTS] – A Santa Clarita teen arrested twice, once for a vandalism and again on a burglary charge, was in court for a progress report and a plea deal Wednesday.

Jake Stanley Heffernan, now 20, who lives in the Northpark neighborhood of Valencia, pleaded no contest to trespassing, according to a spokesman for the District Attorney’s Office.

A no-contest plea is considered the same as a guilty plea in the criminal justice system.

“The felony count was reduced to a misdemeanor,” said Ricardo Santiago of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. “He was put on three years summary probation.”

Heffernan was initially arrested on a “hot prowl” burglary charge, which carries a minimum sentence of a one-year term in state prison. He pleaded to the lesser trespassing charge as part of the deal.

A Valencia resident who lives on the 28000 block of Liana Lane reportedly came home while someone was in his home in Northpark, according to Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station officials.

“Apparently, (the homeowner) came home and saw the suspect with alcohol and (the suspect) took off on foot,” said Lt. Tom Bryski of the Sheriff’s Station, around the time of Heffernan’s second arrest.

On the trespassing charge, his informal probation is unsupervised. However, he also was ordered to continue his live-in treatment at an addiction-rehabilitation facility.

Wednesday’s court date for Heffernan, whose father is a city of Santa Clarita planning commissioner, was also a follow-up for his vandalism arrest.

He was initially charged with three felony counts and three misdemeanor counts of vandalism in that case.

Heffernan was arrested Oct. 16 on suspicion he spraypainted lewd and sexually explicit material on vehicles, houses and property in and surrounding Liana Lane, where he lived with his family, according to Sheriff’s Station reports obtained by KHTS AM-1220.

The various owners of the vandalized property included Time Warner Cable, the city of Santa Clarita and neighborhood residents, according to a criminal complaint.

Heffernan was released from custody Dec. 4 as part of a plea deal in that case.

In the terms of the plea, which was to one count of vandalism with damages greater than $400, Heffernan pleaded no contest Dec. 4, and was sentenced the same day, said Jane Robison, a spokeswoman for the DA’s Office, at the time of his sentencing.

In that case, he was sentenced to 28 days in jail and three years of formal probation.

He ended up paying a total of $280 in restitution, Santiago said.
