1971 - Tejon Ranch Co. allows Fire Dept. to torch the historic Hotel Lebec [story]
Lebec Hotel fire

The following Part 1 (violent or serious) crimes occurred within the patrol area of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station during the period indicated.

It should be noted that major crime is on the rise in Santa Clarita – up 12.2 percent year-over-year in the city and 3.3 percent in unincorporated SCV – as a direct result of Assembly Bill 109, Gov. Jerry Brown’s prison realignment legislation, which granted early release to thousands of convicted criminals. Some media outlets have reported that AB 109 applies only to “low-level” offenders, but this is a misnomer unless one considers felony child abuse, assault and battery, DUI manslaughter, supplying children with heroin or meth, street gang recruiting, selling weapons to mental patients, threats against peace officers and a host of other crimes to be “low-level.” Crime in Santa Clarita is increasing more rapidly than in many other communities because Santa Clarita is receiving far more “early release” prisoners than the average. While the Santa Clarita Valley has only 0.6 percent of the state’s population, it is receiving approximately 6 percent of the AB 109 prisoners.

Also, due to capacity limitations in Los Angeles County, jail inmates (convicts sentenced to 365 days or less) currently serve just 20 percent of their sentence.

In the list below, crimes are shown in chronological order (yyyy-mm-dd) with the most recent at top. Addresses are block numbers, not exact addresses. Some are in the city of Santa Clarita and others are in the unincorporated SCV. Communities in the Palmdale Station’s patrol area (Acton, Lake Elizabeth, etc.) are not included; nor are crimes that are handled by special downtown bureaus or crimes that occur at the Pitchess Detention Center or on Metrolink trains, which are handled by jail personnel and the Transit Services Bureau, respectively.

Data come from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. There is some date overlap from week to week due to the order in which the crimes are added to the LASD database. Some crimes may appear in more than one week’s listing, while others do not. Additional crimes from the most recent week will be included next week when they are added to the LASD database. SCVNews.com cannot attest to any errors or omissions.
