Assemblyman Scott Wilk
Assemblyman Scott Wilk will host an event at Santa Clarita City Hall this November to help educate parents and children on how to stay safe in the digital age.
The event will take place at the Century Room at the Santa Clarita City Hall on Nov. 5.
It has become so important for parents, children and teachers to have a better knowledge of the benefits and dangers of the internet so we can all be better digital citizens, said Patsy Ayala, field representative for Wilk.
“(October) is National Cyber Security Awareness Month,” said Ayala, “we want our local residents to have the knowledge to be safe and secure online.”
A survey from both LifeLock and the National PTA found that 72 percent of children ages 8 and under had access to mobile media in 2013, compared to 38 percent in 2011.
This increase dispenses with the older notions that children are safe when they are alone in their bedroom; with access to the internet now easier than ever before, it becomes even more critical to educate parents and their children on identity theft, sexting and cyberbullying.
Of even more concern to parents and students alike is the rise in ‘phishing,’ or efforts to acquire financial and/or personal data.
The meeting at the Santa Clarita City Hall, located at 23920 Valencia Boulevard in Santa Clarita runs from 6 p.m. – 7 p.m. and will be an interactive forum, allowing specific questions to be answered.
To RSVP for the event, contact the District Office at 661- 286-1565.
