The proposed Laemmle Theatre project will serve as the nexus for the next wave of redevelopment in Old Town Newhall. It is estimated to draw between 150,000 and 200,000 people per year to the district, which will bring additional consumer activity and be a catalyst for new development in the area - resulting in a substantial increase in sales and property tax revenue for the city.

The Santa Clarita City Council will conduct a public hearing Tuesday on the proposed Laemmle Theatre project and the accompanying mixed-use development and parking structure in Old Town Newhall. The city and its former redevelopment agency purchased the square block at the southeast corner of Lyons Avenue and Main Street in 2008 for the purpose of redeveloping it with a theater, which had been in the council-approved plans for Newhall since 2005. Finally in 2013, the city solicited bids, and in July 2015, after hearing unanimous public testimony in support, the council voted to open exclusive negotiations with Laemmle and its developer partner.
