Residents are invited to learn more about the City of Santa Clarita’s Newhall Roundabout Project and the anticipated construction schedule at an Open House hosted from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, at Hart Hall, located at 24151 Newhall Avenue.

The Newhall Roundabout Project serves to improve traffic circulation, provide greater pedestrian connectivity between Main Street and Hart Park, and create an iconic gateway into Old Town Newhall.

“The benefits of this modern roundabout will allow for smoother traffic flow around Old Town Newhall as well as create a focal point to the Southern entrance of Main Street with the addition of a historical public art piece,” said Mayor Bob Kellar.  “Before beginning construction on the Newhall Roundabout Project, we want to gather feedback from the community about this project and educate the community about how this exciting new traffic circle will function.”

One of the priorities identified for revitalization in the Downtown Newhall Specific Plan, which was adopted by City Council in 2005, was to change the character of the area by reconfiguring traffic flow to make the area more pedestrian friendly. The Newhall Roundabout is proposed to be constructed at the intersection of Main Street, Newhall Avenue and 5th Street and will contain an iconic art piece at the center to symbolize Old Town Newhall’s heritage.

For the last 10 years the City of Santa Clarita has actively taken on projects to revitalize and reinvigorate Old Town Newhall. Recent accomplishments include road realignments, circulation improvements, streetscape enhancements along Main Street, and a diverse mix of Thursdays @ Newhall events that attract thousands of visitors annually. Additionally, Old Town Newhall has seen new retail businesses relocate to the growing arts and entertainment district, including:  Luscious Soul, One Savvy Girl, Ma Maison, and J. Serrano.

For more information on the Newhall Roundabout Project, please contact Balvinder Sandhu at (661) 255-4954 or visit Santa-Clarita.com.

This is going to be a traffic killer in the morning when folks are commuting out to the 14 from the middle of the valley. Having to go 2 lights around a roundabout to stay on Newhall Avenue? Kinda silly…ask DC residents how they feel about Dupont Circle…

    Lee,
Construction delay is one thing, but should not be confused with the operation of a modern roundabout.
Many people, like you, confuse older styles of circular intersections with modern roundabouts. East coast rotaries, large multi-lane traffic circles (Arc D’Triumph), and neighborhood traffic circles are not modern roundabouts. If you want to see the difference between a traffic circle, a rotary (UK roundabout) and a modern roundabout (UK continental roundabout), go to http://tinyurl.com/kstate-RAB to see pictures. And here’s another site that shows the difference between an older rotary and a modern roundabout: http://tinyurl.com/bzf7qmg
http://www.fhwa.dot.gov has a video about modern roundabouts that is mostly accurate (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhHzly_6lWM ).
Modern roundabouts are the safest form of intersection in the world. Search http://www.iihs.org for FAQs and safety facts. The safety comes from the ‘slow and go’ operation instead of the ‘stop or go fast’ way a stop light works. The smaller size of the modern roundabout is what makes them safer and keeps speeds in the 20 mph range. This makes it much easier to avoid a crash or stop for pedestrians. It also means that if a crash happens the likelihood of injury is very low. Safety is the #1 reason there are over 2,400 modern roundabouts in the US today and many more on the way.
Slow and go also means less delay than a stop light or stop sign, especially the other 20 hours a day people aren’t driving to or from work.

Check out the roundabout on Hasley Canyon. It is a nightmare and I have personally observed several near misses during rush hour. I have heard nothing positive about that one and now we’re getting another one?

  4. Vanessa says:

bwwwwwwwwwwwwwahahahaahahaaaaa those of us IN Castaic/Val Verde laugh at you! Now, us locals (mostly) have gotten very used to maneuvering through the Round-About, but BOY IS IT OBVIOUS when it’s not someone from “around here” in the car in front of you! All we wanted was a left hand turn arrow from East Bound “Hasley Cyn” to North Bound “The Old Road” – thats ALL we ever asked for… WE got a Round-About, after two years or so of construction mind you. – Good Luck! we’ll be watching (and maybe snickering)
