Construction officially started Wednesday on the Sand Canyon/State Route 14 beautification project with a groundbreaking ceremony near the Mobil station at the northbound SR-14 on-ramp from Sand Canyon Road.
Mayor Bob Kellar, Council Members Laurene Weste, Marsha McLean and TimBen Boydston, City Manager Ken Striplin and Assistant City Manager Frank Oviedo attended, in addition to Morris Thomas, U.S. Rep. Howard “Buck” McKeon’s district director, and Sarah Tyndall, field representative for state Sen. Steve Knight.
Kellar thanked the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the California Department of Transportation for their support and contributions to the project.
Metro has invested more than $1.3 million, according to Transportation Manager Desiree Portillo-Rabinov.
The proposed improvements, which will be completed in early 2014, will be designed to blend in with the surrounding landscape, Kellar said.
“These landscape enhancements will mirror the natural features of this beautiful portion of our community,” he said. “When completed in early 2014, you will see sizeable oak trees, attractive and drought-tolerant plants to accentuate the area.”
Thomas also presented a certificate of recognition from McKeon in support of the project.
