[KHTS] – The College of the Canyons Job And Career Fair drew hundreds of students and Santa Clarita Valley residents in search of employment on Wednesday.
About 60 employers and an estimated 800 to 1,000 job seekers attended the fair, which was hosted at the college’s Valencia campus.
“The job fair itself is to connect job seekers with employers,” said Anthony Michaelides, director of the COC Job & Career Center. “We open the door for employers to come in with their job openings, advertise widely on campus to get our students and community members to come in, and hopefully connect them here at the fair.”
Job seekers gathered around employer booths that interested them, while still more attendees were seated along a “work area” lining the back of the room to fill out applications and participate in on-site interviews.
Attending a job fair where individuals can connect in person with potential employers gives job seekers a certain advantage over those who only apply for jobs online, according to Michaelides.
“To have a chance to meet companies in person is much better than sitting at your computer hoping that you connect with someone on the other end, and you’re not sure where that resume goes or who you’re talking to,” he said. “This is that chance to not only talk to someone in person, but to make that first impression, have a resume in hand, look sharp… It’s all a package, and it’s that opportunity to get in front of someone, which is great.”
The fair featured a variety of open entry-, middle- and upper-level positions, along with several free workshops.
