Students at California Institute of the Arts in Valencia launched a monthly newspaper Tuesday, complete with a front-page editorial criticizing 23-year college President Steven D. Lavine.
According to its publishers, the paper, CalArts Eye, is an “uncensored, multi-métier, monthly publication created, composed and constructed by students for students.”
The editor-in-chief is Lianna Kissinger-Virizlay, who is pursuing her master’s degree in writing. The paper was “conceived in October 2011 out of the collective goals of many students, alumni, faculty and staff to create a unified forum for students to connect, share and speak about community interests and issues.”
The paper covers topics of interest to students in all six CalArts schools – art, critical studies, dance, film/video, music and theater.
CalArts blogger Paul Fraser reports that the paper welcomes submissions from both students and faculty, although all editorial and management decisions are made by students.
A launch party is planned tonight with performances from student bands.
The paper is printed and is also available for viewing online at calartseye.com.
