fataltc[KHTS] – A man died Friday night after his car went over the side of the road and down a 100 foot embankment in San Francisquito Canyon.

Fire Department officials responded to a call of a car over the side of the road near San Francisquito Canyon Road and Dry Gulch around 6:30 p.m., said Supervisor Pittman of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The CHP and local residents identified the crash site as San Francisquito past Stator Lane, roughly a quarter-mile north of the main ruins of the St. Francis Dam.

Emergency personnel, including members of the Santa Clarita Valley’s Search and Rescue Team, worked for more than an hour to try to rescue a man trapped in his vehicle, Pittman said.

The victim, who was the lone occupant, was declared dead at 7:19 p.m., Pittman said.

San Francisquito Canyon Road is closed during the recovery operation.

  1. That’s so sad. I drive that road everyday… Those curves can be so scary.

  2. This happens far too often. There needs to be law enforcement presence in order to get people to finally slow down.

    • I drive that road everyday to work and I can tell you I use to never see a cop. But the last few weeks I have seen at least one (one day three) everyday. It’s getting better.

    • I’m glad someone’s seen them Kristen. I also drive it daily and have unfortunately never seen one. I have, however, been passed by people going at least 80 down that road. I just hope they start really cracking down on the speeders.

    • I drive it daily for work as well and see them all the time.

    • Bob Porter says:

I drove by that area Fri morning 8:30 am, and there were two CHP cars on the side of the road, apparently clocking traffic, looking for speeders. Guess they can’t be there 24/7. Also there was an over the side accident at about the same time as the San Fran accident on Boquet cyn rd just east of Godde Pass.

  3. CHP has been out there more which we all hope will help.

  4. I have people tailgating me and crossing the double yelliow lines to pass me and I drive the speed limit. Sad…nothing is that important…

  5. My homie said it was someone on a motorcycle n his neighbors knew him.

  6. That exact spot right past the dam I’ve seen a black SUV flipped upside down a few years back literally in the same exact spot

  7. Hans Ahlert says:

You either know how to drive a canyon or you don’t. By driving the speed limit, you probably piss off most people during rush-hour, and are more of a problem than you realize. You “force” people to pass you. That not withstanding, people who go over the side are clearly out of control. This applies especially to some motorcycle riders. One unfortunately daredevil should not make everyone “hysterical” and wish for a police state….Welcome to the world.

  8. My sister heard it was a motorcycle too Brittany ..hmmm

  10. There was a motorcycle fatality reported at almost the same time on the S-14 at red rover mine. The chp website has this as a white truck with a trailer over the side.

  11. Deborah Hoke says:

San fran isn’t bad its Bouquet they need to worry about. People speed A LOT worse on Bouquet.

  16. The road was open at 9:00. I drove down on my way to work

  17. Jay Tallent says:

This is the same location where several accidents have occurred since this section of road was opened to bypass heavily flood damaged areas a few years ago.

  18. Not another one . When will people get listen . My daughters boyfriend was another useless death

  19. Because of people’s ignorance

  20. Someone passed me 2 weeks ago at the passing part (& I was going 65) & gave me the finger! How is that too slow?!? I left my high beams on.

It’s a nice road, however the people who drive reckless, careless, and invincible cause and get into these horrible accidents. It is not the Highway Patrol’s fault, these people are responsible for their own carelessness.
It is truly sad and unfortunate people can’t control their reckless behaviors.
I have seen accidents on this road too many times, yet they continue.
How about seed control by implimenting road studs…it causes drivers to slow down.
