Haggen announced this week that it will be closing more than 100 stores in the Pacific Southwest market, including its last store in the Santa Clarita Valley.

Haggen, which filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy earlier this month, is asking the Bankruptcy Court for approval to conduct Store Closing Sales, according to a news release. All employees of the non-core stores and the Pacific Southwest support office will receive 60 day notice of the pending store and office closures.

The closures include Nevada, Oregon, California, Arizona and Washington.

The McBean Parkway Haggen store closure was announced four months after the grand opening in April. The Haggen store located on Bouquet Canyon in Saugus, which opened in June, is one of the dozens of stores that will be closed in the next couple months.

During the process, all stores will remain open, according to a news release, and the employees will continue to receive their pay and benefits until the stores close.

Haggen’s is working with Albertson’s in its request for the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to waive the restriction in the FTC Order which restricts the hiring of Haggen employees, according to a news release. Because this is a modification of an order entered by the FTC, the waiver will require Commission approval, which the FTC staff is seeking to obtain on an expedited basis.

Haggen officials plan to focus on their Pacific Northwest stores.

“Although this has been a difficult process and experience, we will remain concentrated in the Pacific Northwest where we began,” said John Clougher, Chief Executive Officer of Haggen Pacific Northwest, in a news release, “focusing on fresh Northwest products and continuing our support and involvement in the communities we serve.”

Haggen grew from 18 stores to 164 stores after purchasing many Albertson’s locations in December 2014, according to a news release.

“After careful consideration of all alternatives, the company concluded that a reorganization through the Chapter 11 process is the best way for Haggen to preserve value for all stakeholders,” Clougher said, in a news release. “The action we are taking… will allow us to continue to serve our customers and communities while providing Haggen with a process to re-align our operations to be positioned for the future.”

  1. Any word on which market will move into the Bouquet Canyon spot????

  2. I feel bad for the employees. Haggen had no business expanding so rapidly.

This reminds me of the mismanagement at Disney Stores (2005), when The Children’s Place (arrogantly) thought they could do a better job than in-house Cast Members.

  3. Jon Vitti says:

There was a Haggen in SCV??

  4. I wish they would have left my Pavilion’s alone, now we have a big empty store there at McBean and Creekside.

  5. George Elias says:

    Micah Diaz Alejandro Gonzalez

  6. They’re all Idiots

  7. What a crock – it seems like they had this all planned – how could a company that large make such a huge mistake? Prayers for all the employees

  8. I went there a few times and it was overpriced, and never busy. The employees were nice though.

  9. As a former Pavilions/ Haggen employee, I am UTTERLY DISGUSTED about all of this. So many livelihoods turned upside down. I was in the second “lay off” phase. Basically kicked to the curb to find our own way. Thankfully obtained a job with Albertsons, but back down to square one. We all drank the “koolaid!” With high hopes of a new prosperous venture! It was pure POISON from the onset! SHAME ON HAGGEN!

    • I agree with you, I am so sorry for the shameful way you were treated. For over 12 years, I enjoyed the wonderful customer service of “my Pavillions” in The Promenade at McBean. It breaks my heart to see how shabby you were treated. I am glad you found a job and I pray the best for the others.

    • I am so sorry this happened to you and the other employees. I’m sure greater things will come your way..

  10. Lina Boulos says:

I can’t believe this was a misjudgement mistake. Something is.not adding up

  11. God bless the employees

  12. The prices were way too high. Not competitive at all. No wonder they didn’t make it. Where were the brains behind Haggan??

  13. Eric Baker says:

Going out of business prices are STILL higher than Whole Foods.

  14. Rich Herrera says:

What kind of business plan did they have going into this? Obviously nor a good one. The people that work for them are the ones I feel sorry for. The corporate corrupters are still going to get their million dollar bonuses.

  15. Travis Loren says:

I went there thinking I would save a bunch of money seeing they had 20-30% off everything while they were closing. I got the same stuff I get a Von’s and spent about $100 more. They were overpriced even with 30% off each item. Crooks for sure.

  16. Didn’t even last 4 months. The only thing I ever bought there were the Vons brands that were on clearance when Haggen first opened.

  17. Kim Roberts says:

    Is the CEO fired?

  18. Employees sticking it out don’t even get accumulated sick or vacation pay. Robbed.

  19. Allan Cameron says:

Amazing, tragic failure from start to finish. The only people benefited were the lawyers who structured this crazy deal at the beginning.

  20. Cleaving Arizona, too.

  21. Why the heck did they takeover Von’s and Pavilions if they weren’t capable?! We need grocery stores here.

  22. Wow, that is horrible for the employees!

  23. That’s because they are way to expensive

  24. Worst business plan I’ve seen in a long time

  25. Well, that didn’t last long. I’m sorry for the employees.

  26. Tina Fender says:

I didn’t even know we had a Haggens

  27. cbuck58 says:

My theory. It was a front to get the FTC to approve the Vons Albertsons merger. Those poor employees who stayed on

  28. We went inside and it was a mess from the day they opened. Moldy bread and gross nasty floors. Looked like a nightmare from day one. Peace out. See ya

  29. It seems some govt shenanigans were involved?

“It was only an 18-store chain in Washington and Oregon when it bought the stores from Albertsons and Safeway, which were forced to sell them as part of a merger to satisfy antitrust concerns raised by the Federal Trade Commission.”
    http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-haggen-struggles-20150716-story.html

  30. This was a scam from the beginning, for sure.

  31. Dave Lee says:

That’s a shame. So much better than 31 flavors. ?

  32. Garry Fisher says:

    Get Ready For Another Vallarta

  33. What a cluster f… that was. Whoever gave them financial advice should go to jail and have to pay the employees severence.

  34. Wow what a letdown for the employees!! Go to Ralph’s!! They are hiring at all 205 stores throughout So Cal!! Good luck;)

  35. Joan Pipia says:

They just opened here in Henderson. Prices are way to high. Sure it won’t take long before they close here too.

  36. Irma Blanco says:

Wow!!! This is not good for the employees or the Santa Clarita community. I loved when Von’s was there. They always had beer prices & sales.

  37. Carl Conte says:

They are leaving Las Vegas also.

  38. Tony Follett says:

Now we have less food supply, I loved my Vons employees at the Bouquet Canyon store. A few of them remembered me from when we shopped the Lyons Ave Vons. Haggens gave me bad vibes from day one.

  39. As if this wasn’t Albertsons plan.

  40. We want our VONS back:(

  41. Terrie says:

60 days till unemployed and with so many looking for work its very bleak do I have to use unemployment to pay for health care ? OBAMA-CARE is a joke I dont even want to think about it ; \ !!!!

  42. Madison says:

Any word on the close date for the Bouquet location? Sorry for the loss of jobs, but I got 70% off my grocery bill at the McBean location.
