The Henry Mayo Newhall Foundation has donated $8,000 to the Karden’s Garden School Garden Curriculum at Charles Helmers Elementary School.
Charles Helmers Elementary School officials have spent the last year building the structures and having a mural painted, all in preparation for the rollout of a Garden Program, meant to compliment classroom curriculum through hands-on activities.
In the outdoor classroom, grade specific concepts will be offered in a real life setting. The garden will also provide students an opportunity to reconnect with nature, develop a responsibility for the environment and learn to work within a community.
Until now, the Karden’s Garden School Garden Curriculum, created by Lisa Ely, was the last part of the program that remained unfunded. But with the generous donation by the Henry Mayo Newhall Foundation, that is no longer a concern.
“It feels so nice to have the pressure of money off the table. Now we can just do cool stuff,” said Natalie Freed, Garden Chair.
In addition to creating the School Garden Curriculum, Ely, is also a television documentary producer and an award winning author of the Kinder Gardens book series. Classes began in February at Helmers, and will cover topics including Dirt Basics, Seeds and Planting, Types of Vegetables and Harvesting.
