Santa Clarita needs your help! Senator Martin Heinrich has decided to undo 14 years of hard work to prevent mega-mining in Soledad Canyon. A bill sits on the Senate floor that is backed by Cemex and the City of Santa Clarita, at no cost to taxpayers, to prevent a mega-mine from being built on the edge of town.

Santa Clarita citizens can make a difference, and protect future generations from 20 years of environmental devastation, by reaching out to Senator Heinrich to request that he not block the bill which would protect the citizens of Santa Clarita.

The background. On Thursday, December 11, 2014, Representative Howard P. “Buck” McKeon (R-CA-25) was able to secure passage of his H.R. 5742, the identical companion measure to Senator Boxer’s bill. HR. 5742 was passed on a voice vote and sent to the Senate. Representative Brad Sherman (D-CA-30) spoke in favor of the bill on the House floor, signaling strong bi-partisan support in the House of Representatives.

Unfortunately, Senator Martin Heinrich (D-New Mexico) has placed a “hold” on the bill, essentially stating that he does not support the measure. Senator Boxer and Senator Feinstein continue to engage senator Heinrich in an effort to secure his support for the bill. It would be helpful Santa Clarita, Antelope Valley and Los Angeles County unincorporated residents to communicate with Mr. Heinrich and provide him reasons why the enactment of the legislation is critical.

We do not know how CEMEX will choose to proceed next year; whether they will continue to partner with the community as they have over the past seven years, or out of frustration with the lack of progress in Washington, move forward to secure their final permits and open the mine!
