Wine Event Raises Funds for Club Kids
“One March Night… A Special Wine Event” brought in $14,000 for Club kids on March 21 at Salt Creek Grille. Once again, Karl and Terry Kanowsky were excellent chairs. Adam and Diana Lee, the owners of Siduri Winery, were very generous donating wine and auction prizes. They agreed to double a popular package that included a wonderful collection of signed bottles from Siduri and Novy Wineries. The Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley is grateful to everyone who helped make this evening such a success.

Basketball Star Visits Clubhouse
Charles Barkley, named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History, came to the Newhall Clubhouse in February to film a commercial for CDW. He plays an “IT guy” who is hired to actually bring a basketball championship to the company Gordon & Taylor. In between takes, Barkley mingled and conversed with the kids. He also signed autographs and interrupted a Girl Scouts meeting to talk about women’s basketball.

What’s Happening at the Clubhouses

Children, ages 7-17, enjoy a variety of stimulating and fun activities at the Canyon Country and Newhall clubhouses.

Nearly 20 kids enjoyed a spring break outing on April 3 to the Los Angeles Zoo, including a look at the new LAIR exhibit, which features reptiles, amphibians, and other animals.
Local teenager Isaac Corrarubias was among 28 youth recognized on March 15 at the Boys & Girls Clubs of America-Los Angeles County Alliance Youth of the Year event at the California Science Center in Los Angeles. Isaac represented the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley as its 2011 Youth of Year.  A member of the Club for eight years, he is now attending College of the Canyons. He hopes to one day lead a Boys & Girls Club as the chief professional officer.  Isaac received a $1,000 scholarship, laptop computer, four Disneyland tickets, and two LA Kings tickets.
Kathy Hunter from the Hart School District led a bullying workshop with teenagers from Leaders in Training and Keystone Club on March 14. She talked about how to identify bullying and described the different types of bullying.
On March 10, six teenagers enjoyed a visit to the Walt Disney Concert Hall. The orchestra seats were donated by Jack Shine, a past Club board member.
The Sierra Vista Clubhouse sponsored a Great Bike Giveaway on March 23. After collecting bike donations from Walmart for several months, the Club was able to raffle off 46 bikes.
On February 28, a group of kids enjoyed an outing to a Clippers game against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Both Clubhouses recently finished basketball season for ages 7 to 12. Sierra Vista won the championship for ages 10-12. The season for teenager players is now in full swing.
On March 31, the Division 2 (ages 10-12) basketball teams from Sierra Vista and Newhall participated in a Biddy Basketball Tournament at the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Monica. All players played hard and enjoyed themselves. Sierra Vista won the consolation prize after losing the first game and then going on to win the rest of the games in the alternate bracket. Newhall lost both its first and second games.
