Personnel from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Santa Clarita Station, conducted two DUI/DL Checkpoints on Friday, Feb. 21, as part of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department commitment to public safety. These checkpoints were two of many that have been or will be conducted throughout the year in the city of Santa Clarita.
Friday’s checkpoints were located on Bouquet Canyon Road at Wellston Drive, and Whites Canyon Road at Delight Street. They were conducted between the hours of 6:00 p.m. and 2:00 a.m. Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public.
This DUI/Driver’s License checkpoint lowers DUI deaths and injuries. A major component of these checkpoints is the deterrent effects it has on those who might drive drunk or drugged impaired bring about more awareness and encouraging everyone to use sober designated drivers.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent.

1 Suspect was arrested for Driving a Vehicle Not Equipped with an Ignition Interlock Device (IID) as required by Law, 23247(e) CVC
0 Suspects was arrested for Refusing to Comply with Checkpoint Procedures, 2800(a) / 2814.2(a) CVC
1 Suspect was arrested for a $40K Traffic Warrant and sent to court
4 Suspended / Revoked Drivers were arrested and sent to court
5 Unlicensed Drivers were arrested and sent to court
2 Vehicles were stored for 1 Day
3 Vehicles were impounded for 30 Days
0 Vehicles were released per checkpoint release procedures
AS A DRIVER, PLAN AHEAD WITH THESE TIPS:
Arrange rides home for your friends, family, co-workers and yourself before the drinking begins
Identify and provide free non-alcoholic drinks or other promotional items to the Designated Driver
Party hosts and servers must limit drinks to your guests or patrons. Don’t serve more than one or two over several hours.
Cut back on the amount of drinks you plan to bring to the party – and provide plenty of food.
Funding for these operations is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

If the life saved by taking even one drunk driver off the road was YOUR loved one it would be worth it!
I am just not convinced this is an effective use of resources. All of that cost and taking men and women off patrol for a handful of citations just doesn’t add up for me. Would rather see stepped up patrols.

How Many officers participante during both checkpoints?? Don’t you think is better to take the checkpoints off and let the cops drive around the city to protect us and also look for drunk drivers,,,
@Alerta come on you know it takes about 20 or more of them standing around do nothing to check for drink drivers. A lot of supervisors / sergeants and corporals getting over time pay to stand around. Hmmm can we look for drunk drivers in a more cost-efficient way
These are proven to be completely unconstitutional but the state government gets away with it.
The last time I went through a checkpoint, I had just picked up one of my kids from work. I wanted to get through it quickly, so I told them to behave and not give them any reason to pull us over. Of course, in the same fashion my family always work, they HAD to act up. We pull up to two officers, and put the car in park.
The first officer approached my window, and asked where I was coming from. “Picking my daughter up from work”, I replied. He looks into the car (two other girls in the car besides me, one is 15). My older daughter (24) is acting silly, the younger is trying not to laugh, failing miserably.
The officer looks back at me and asks, “Do you have any weapons or drugs in the car?” I look at my older daughter, turn back to the officer and replied, “Believe it or not, No”. The second officer started to laugh, the first held it back.
The first officer asked, “Have you had anything to drink?”.
My daughter is still making noises in the back.
I looked him in the eye and deadpan, “I wish”.
Both officers busted up laughing. I was waved through.

Two separate checkpoints, eight hours each, how many deputies, sergeants, supervisors, etc., posted at each one(?) X’s each of their salaries, + over-all operating costs, and this is somehow saving $6 for every $1 spent? I’m curious how they figured THAT one out! Not to mention how blatantly un-constitutional these things are…

It’s great that for a change they’re actually ticketing and/or arresting people who commit crimes. Where we live the idiots walk up and down the street writing bogus tickets. For example, my son had a smog extension in his windshield where it was supposed to be and the Sheriffs of this lovely county wrote him 3 tickets anyways for expired tags. He mailed in a copy of the certificate with his ticket oh but get this if he wants it reviewed and thrown out he has to pay $10 so the effers make $30 off of him anyways for writing false tickets.
And they wonder why people can’t stand them.

Funny watching soooo many people talk negatively about law enforcement and what they “chose to do” while on duty. I’m sure some of you with those big INTERNET MUSCLES, sure do know the law so much better then scv sheriffs department. And I’m sure what you do every day , for a living is much more beneficial and potentially life saving then they. But how about this? Since you seem to have all the answers.. Know right from wrong SO MUCH MORE SO … How about you get up off your far superior ass , and make a difference. Let them know just how TERRIBLY WRONG AND UNCONSTITUTIONAL it is to do DUI checkpoints in a city where vehicular death is running rampant … Especially with our youth. I’m sure you hav grown up in the town where countless friends have died in terrible terrible accidents. God forbid they try and find solutions to the unrelenting problem. And btw.. I’m sure your loud mouths are the same ones that would be screaming and crying to law enforcement and wonder WHY THEY WERENT PROTECTING YOU if some was drunk and slammed in to you or killed a love one. None of you have any real experience or education as to why you have formed your HALF WIT opinion on these “corrupt officers”. How about instead of getting all conspiracy theory online, like the big shot that you are… You maybe say thanks. Thanks for protecting my streets . No one ever claims that law enforcement officials are perfect and haven’t made mistakes. But no organization or person is. But you are a ignoramus if you actually believe that those deputies don’t have their hearts in the right place. Most of them grew up out here and have seen so many tragedies happen that touched them personally. But hey .. Again I say, as a kid who was driven around by drunken adults most of my childhood, Im happy that the SCS DEPT are doing this. My experience has haunted me forever. Go ahead and hv a good time, drink and hv fun but DONT GET BEHIND THE WHEEL !
Since when do the LA County Sheriffs have corporals? Please keep it positive. Check points are not always convenient but apparently do good. Even taking just taking just one drunk driver off of the road makes it worth it. Have you ever seen the face of a Grieving loved one? I have, and you never forget that. Great job Sheriffs dept!!!

@Sarah the US Supreme Court ruled these as NOT unconstitutional. However they let each State govern them. Remember driving is privilege not a right.
Carol, I Remember when driving was a privilege not a right but now it has become a right when illegals’ can get a drivers licenses when they aren’t even suppose to be walking the streets of the US
But having corporals is a mute point, the message is apparently being missed. God bless those who haven’t got the understanding of the bigger picture.

They should change the hours. Liquor stops being served at 2am.. Wouldn’t that be when most people leave drunk?
