It was clearly the best basketball game of the season … so far.
Jeremy Gatewood hit a 3-pointer with 6.2 seconds to play in the second overtime to lift the Saugus Centurions over the Valencia Vikings 83-81 Tuesday night in boys Foothill League basketball at Saugus High School.
The game was televised by SCVTV.
Saugus (11-8, 1-2) got a 3-pointer at the end of regulation from the most unlikely source – Mitch Davis, who had not even attempted a shot from beyond the arc all season. But his one and only attempt went in and it sent the game to overtime.
Through both overtime periods, it was the play of the guards from both teams that kept it close. Valencia’s Troy Hammel finished with 27 points
Saugus’s Gatewood led all scorers with 32 points, earning U.S. Marines Player of the Game honors for his efforts. Junior Chris Lockwood added 19 for the Centurions.
