The City of Santa Clarita will host a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 3:30 p.m., to celebrate the completion of the first Building Improvement Grant Project in Old Town Newhall. The event will be held at 24261 Main Street in Old Town Newhall.
The Holzman Family Trust, for the benefit of Newhall Bicycle Company and Pulchella Winery and as a supporter of Old Town Newhall, was the recipient of a Building Improvement Grant funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). The City of Santa Clarita was awarded $303,635 in ARRA funds to assist property owners with structural enhancements and aesthetic improvements in Old Town Newhall in an effort to stimulate the economy.
The goals of the grant program included: preserving the unique qualities and historic elements of the Old Town Newhall area; enhancing existing buildings to retain businesses; restoring economic vitality; and increasing investment in commercial properties in Old Town Newhall.
“The Santa Clarita City Council is committed to the revitalization of Old Town Newhall and this program has been instrumental in enhancing the charm, character, and curb-appeal of Main Street.Old Town Newhall is a classic example of what can be achieved when public programs and private investment partner for a common purpose.The end result is a reinvigorated business community, like Old Town Newhall, which is now one of the most exciting places to do business in Santa Clarita,” said Mayor Laurie Ender.
Businesses within the Downtown Newhall Specific Plan area were invited to apply for one of five grants, representing up to $55,000 per grant.Eligible improvements to building structures could include: paint, signage, awnings, or exterior lighting.Grant funds could also be used to assist property owners with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines and City code compliance.
A total of five commercial properties and one alternate were selected and awarded grant funding, thereby benefiting 11 businesses in Old Town Newhall. This is the first project to be completed, but all projects will be completed by fall 2012.
