Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca is looking to add another weapon to his anti-terrorist arsenal.
On Tuesday he’ll ask the Board of Supervisors for $265,000 so he can buy a boat equipped with sonar that can find improvised explosive devices planted underwater. He needs board approval to spend more than $250,000 on a fixed asset.
The “Sonar Improvised Explosive Device Detection Vessel” will “assist in the security of the county water supply systems such as dams, reservoirs and aqueducts, along with the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach,” Baca said in a letter to the board.
The vessel would be totally funded through money the county has already received from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security by way of the state, which has approved the purchase of the boat.
“Safe water supply and safe ports are not only vital to the well-being of the citizens of the county, but (also) have a dire fiscal impact to ensure goods and services flow without interruption,” Baca’s letter said.
The boat would be staffed by existing members of the sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau.
