David Smith
Saugus High graduate David Smith is on his way to the Summer Olympics in London as a member of the USA men’s volleyball team.
Pending approval from the United States Olympic Committee, Smith, Saugus High class of 2003, is one of six players on the United States team who will be making his first trip to the Olympics.
The 6-foot-7 middle blocker played for San Sebastian in the Puerto Rican men’s league in 2009 and 2010. He has been a member of the United States national team since 2009.
“It’s a good group of veterans with Olympic experience and first-time Olympians who have been an integral part of our team.” U.S. Olympic Men’s Volleyball Team Head Coach Alan Knipe of Huntington Beach said in a release.
The USA men’s volleyball team won the gold medal at the Beijing Summer Games in 2008. The team is ranked No. 6 in the world heading into the Summer Games in London.
Five players on the 2012 roster played on the gold-medal winning team in 2008. Clay Stanley from Honolulu and Reid Priddy from Richmond, Va., are making their third appearance for the United States in the Olympics.
“It was incredibly difficult to narrow our roster to 12 players,” Knipe said. “For a variety of reasons, we’ve played a lot of different guys in key tournaments during the quad and ended up with a very deep pool of talent.”
