The Walker Ranch entry point to Placerita Canyon State and County Park could become more “equestrian friendly” if the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approves $98,000 Tuesday for improvements to the trailhead.
According to a board report, the “North County Trail-Placeita Canyon Improvement Project” consists of regrading the surface road at the Walker Ranch Trailhead, restoring roadway shoulders, and installing picnic tables, hitching rails and split-rail fencing.
“The road improvements will include regrading and adding gravel, which will stabilize the road surface to minimize damage to the road from washout,” the report states.
It says the project is exempt from environmental review because it “includes no expansion of an existing use; structures replaced will be located on the same site as existing structures and will have the same purpose and capacity; and the proposed project will not involve the removal of healthy, mature trees. Additionally, the proposed project is not in a sensitive environment, and there are no cumulative impacts, unusual circumstances, or other limiting factors…”
The project is to be funded through 1992 and 1996 bond moneys, and a contract should be signed in mid-October. Work is to commence in mid-November and finish in March.
Under the county’s Regional Park and Open Space District Youth Employment Policy, at-risk youth would be used to perform brush clearance, grading and general clean-up work.
