They’re sleeker, faster and shiner than your regular-old garden-variety pumas.
These are Super Pumas, and they’re the newest addition to Sheriff Lee Baca’s search and rescue fleet.
The first of three will make its official public debut at a ceremony Wednesday in Long Beach.
“Super Puma” is the name of the Eurocopter Model AS332L1 helicopter. Three of them are replacing the military-surplus Sikorskys the Sheriff’s Aero Bureau has been using for search and rescue, heavy-lift and troop transport.
“The Aero Bureau provides everything from patrol support to homeland security to search and rescue operations,” sheriff’s officials say. “The Sikorsky H-3 helicopters that are used for mountain rescue have greatly enhanced their ability to address any situation requiring air support within the Sheriff’s Department’s jurisdiction. The Air-5 Rescue Program provides some of the most advanced technical rescue capabilities available in the nation. With a flight crew of two deputy pilots, a sergeant crew chief and two Emergency Service Detail Deputy Paramedics, the team is deployed for search and rescue and over-water operations and can rapidly deploy tactical response forces during major incidents.”
The unveiling takes place at 2 p.m. at 3235 North Lakewood Blvd. in Long Beach.
