The Gary Urwin Jazz Orchestra is known as “a veritable who’s who among the Los Angeles area’s most accomplished studio and big band artists,” and it’s coming to the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center at College of the Canyons for one night only at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24.
Urwin, along with the award-winning COC Big Band, will treat audiences to jazz-based renditions of classics such as “Beauty and the Beast” and “When You Wish Upon a Star.”
Audience members will also be exposed to the creative genius of trumpeter Carl Saunders, Urwin’s showcase musician for the PAC performance. Before joining Urwin, Saunders played with the likes of Buddy Rich, Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra.
“This is an amazing opportunity for the COC jazz ensemble, program and students,” said COC music director KC Manji. “We are extremely fortunate to have friends of this musical caliber that invest so much of their time and talents with COC students.”
The 18-member Gary Urwin Jazz Orchestra was formed in 2000, releasing its first album “Perspectives” in 2000. Other notable band members include Wayne Bergeron, Pete Christlieb and more.
Event attendees will be able to enjoy music by the COC lab band in the lobby prior to the show and during intermission. Those interested will also be able to purchase Urwin’s music, which will be for sale in the PAC lobby on the night of the performance.
