[KHTS] – The Hart High School Board approved construction projects Wednesday including a new Saugus High School auditorium; two-story classroom buildings at Hart High and Sierra Vista Junior High; and shade structures at West Ranch High School and Golden Valley High School.

The Division of the State Architect approved the plans for the structures in Aug. 2014.

The requested motion to adjust the total construction budget to $13,500,000 and amend the architectural design fee by $279,400 was also approved on Wednesday.

It is anticipated that the auditorium will go to bid within the next two to four months.

The expected construction cost will be $13.5 million, assuming four years of escalation from the June 2012 estimate of $10.1 million, according to Wednesday’s agenda.

The original total construction budget for the project was set at $8,818,000 per the January 2011 Agreement for Architectural Services for the Saugus High School Auditorium.

For additional architectural engineering services, $29,400 will be needed, according to the Hart School District’s  Wednesday’s agenda.

District staff has completed planning for West Ranch High School shade structure and is prepared to go to formal design, Division of the Architect (DSA) submittal, fabrication, and construction.

The scope of work approved for West Ranch High School is:

* One 60’ by 60’ structure for the quad with four 14’ x 14’ single post structures located outside the cafeteria building at the lower quad.

* Ten 14’ x 14’ single post structures in various locations at the upper quad.

* One 14×14-foot single post structure at main entrance of the school.

The total estimated proposal is $273,777.28.

In April 2014 the Santa Clarita Valley Facilities Foundation provided the District with a donation of $1,000,000 for installation of shade structures District-wide.

The Shade Structure Program has been grouped into three phases to align with Shade Structures, Inc.’s, capacity for project execution.

The three phases are:

Phase I:  Golden Valley High School, West Ranch High School

Phase II:  Arroyo Seco Junior High School, Sierra Vista Junior High School, Saugus High School

Phase III:  Placerita Junior High School, Bowman High School, Canyon High School, La Mesa Junior High School, Sequoia School.

    Good. Long overdue for Saugus.

OTOH, 15 “single post 14×14 shade structures” and one 60×60 shade structure at West Ranch for a total cost of nearly $275K?

I have a few 14×14 single post shade structures on my property. They cost a lot less than that. They’re called trees.
