For more information, contact the Commission Secretary at (661) 286-4018. The five-member Arts Commission meets on the second Thursday of the month, at 6:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers. Members of the public wishing to address the commission may do so by completing a speaker’s slip upon arrival at the meeting. There is a three minute time limit per person.

Listen to both well-established and new and emerging singer songwriter’s at Note by Note, the FREE monthly songwriter’s night in Old Town Newhall. Note by Note is a chance for professional and aspiring songwriters to showcase their songs in front of a live audience and an opportunity for fans to hear new music. Each songwriter selected will perform four original songs of their own composition.

Chair Tim Disney and the CalArts Board of Trustees invite the CalArts community and friends to celebrate the inauguration of the Institute’s fourth President Ravi S. Rajan. A highly regarded artist and musician, Rajan is also a teacher and administrator who brings his innovative and visionary leadership.

The inauguration celebration takes place on Friday, Oct. 13, 2017, on the CalArts campus.

Schedule of Events

9:00 a.m.
Opening Exhibition in the Main Gallery.

10:00 a.m. – Inauguration ceremony processional begins from the Main Gallery to the Wild Beast pavilion. Welcome by Tim Disney, greetings by distinguished guests, performances, and the inaugural address by CalArts’s 4th President, Ravi Rajan.11:30 am

Guests adjourn to Clark’s Field for lunch and a special performance by Ravi Rajan on trumpet with the CalArts Latin Jazz Ensemble.Afternoon continues with special programming for CalArts Weekend.

Oct 13, 2017: Artist Reception – Ashley V. Blalock at Newhall Community Center

You are invited to meet Ashley V. Blalock, the artist behind the Fiber Art Installation that has transformed the Newhall Community Center for ARTober, the month-long celebration of art happening in October.

Ashley was born and raised in San Diego, CA. She earned an MFA in sculpture from the San Francisco Art Institute, an MA in art history from the University of California Riverside, and a BA in painting from San Diego State University. She was a resident at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and Vermont Studio Center. Her solo installation venues include the Nevada Museum of Art, the Lion Brand Yarn Studio in New York, and the Last Bookstore in Los Angeles, and her work has been exhibited in group exhibitions at the Craft in America Center, Mingei International Museum, and Arthouse at the Jones Center. Her work has been reviewed in the San Diego Union Tribune and by Fluent~Collaborative, and featured in Vogue Knitting Crochet and Interweave Crochet Magazine. Ashley V. Blalock lives in Southern California.

This powerful, true drama is about six women who went to Vietnam: five nurses and a country western singer booked by an unscrupulous agent to entertain the troops. The play portrays each young woman before, during, and after her tour in the war-torn nation and ends as each leaves a personal token at the memorial wall in Washington.
