The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors will consider budgeting $1 million Tuesday for improvements to the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center and other parts of William S. Hart Park in Newhall. (The Senior Center sits on land that is actually part of Hart Park.)
The $1 million is in addition to dollars previously allocated for a new and improved entryway to Hart Park, which work is to start soon.
The upgrades would touch most parts of Hart Park, including the Senior Center, picnic area parking lot, the museum and outbuildings, and the old park staff office and former trading post.
Water service would be restored to the back campground, the park’s irrigation system would be upgraded, and security lighting would be replaced.
According to a board document:
“The Senior Center and Hart Park picnic area parking refurbishments include asphalt grinding, patching, slurry seal and striping.
“The general repairs to the Hart Museum and appurtenant structures, which include the Bunk House, Naylor House, Frew House, Chauffeur’s Quarters and Hart Hall, will include replacement or repairs to damaged doors and woodwork, weatherproofing, water-damaged plaster, thermal protection, paint, floors and windows.
“Repairs to the old park staff office and former trading post include repair or replacement of roofing, damaged doors and woodwork, windows painting and lighting.
“The upgrades to the irrigation system include the repair of distribution piping and the installation of smart controllers. The security lighting improvements consists of replacement of existing security light fixtures. The restoration of water service consists of installation of new piping and point of connection to replace the existing damaged waterline.”
The $1 million would come from the county’s capital project budget for the 5th Supervisorial District.
According to the board document, “Certain amenities of the William S. Hart Regional Park will be closed during implementation of the improvements. The closures will be coordinated with the (Parks) Department to minimize inconvenience to the public.”
If approved Tuesday, work would start in September and should be substantially complete in February 2013.
