Granada Hills businessman Edward Headington released a list of endorsers Monday in his bid for the 38th Assembly District seat currently held by Cameron Smyth, R-Santa Clarita.
Headington is the only Democrat who has announced his candidacy for the seat. He’ll face three Republicans in the open primary in June: Scott Wilk, Patricia McKeon and Paul Strickland, all of the Santa Clarita Valley. The assembly district covers most of the Santa Clarita Valley, Simi Valley and the northern San Fernando Valley.
Among Headington’s listed supporters are several school board members and educators from across the district including Christy Smith of the Newhall School Board and Rose Koscielny of the Saugus Union School Board.
Smith said in a statement from Headington’s campaign: “We need leaders like Edward Headington to offset cuts that force districts to lay off teachers, increase class size and reduce the number of days in the school year.”
Other listed school officials are Simi Valley board members Rob Collins and Arleigh Kidd; LAUSD board members Tamar Galatzan, Nury Martinez, Julie Kornstein (retired) and John Greenwood (retired); and Los Angeles Community College trustees Kelly Candaele, Mona Field, Miguel Santiago, Scott Svonkin and Steve Veres.
“As a product of California’s public school system, I am alarmed about the lack of respect for education in the state budget year after year,” Headington said in a statement. “My top priority in the Legislature will be to address the state’s ongoing fiscal problems and restore the programs that made our education system great.”
