The “Heroin Kills” symposium returns Aug. 28.
The City of Santa Clarita will host the third annual Heroin Kills Symposium on Wednesday, Aug. 28, at 6:30 p.m. at the Santa Clarita Activities Center located at 20880 Centre Pointe Parkway. The Symposium is free and open to the public.
The Symposium will provide tools needed to identify signs of abuse and is a great resource for parents to understand heroin and prescriptions drug abuse which are problems affecting families in the Santa Clarita Valley. Returning to the Heroin Kills Symposium will be a panel of experts including representatives from public health and public safety organizations, schools and experts in treatment, and recovery. Parents will receive valuable first-hand knowledge on ways to protect themselves and loved ones from the perils of heroin and other drugs.
“Heroin and prescription pill abuse has destroyed far too many Santa Clarita families,” stated Mayor Bob Kellar. “As a City, we continue to fight back and one of the best things community members can do is to get informed and the purpose of the symposium is to give parents and youth the tools they need to keep their family members safe.”
New to this year’s program is a demonstration, using actual paraphernalia seized in Santa Clarita, showing how drug users hide their habits from their parents. Also, there will be a presentation showing the shocking reality of what teens are seeing and posting on social media.

The main reason heroin kills so many is because it is unregulated, brought in by cartels and cut and distributed by drug dealers with no experience with how to safely distribute it as a pharmacist would. Legalize and regulate it, rehabilitation, drug prevention,and harm reduction are the only real way to deal with the problem of addiction and abuse of drugs. Building more prisons, especially private prisons for slave labor is a slippery slope into a dark dark hole which has not worked in the 40 years the drug war has been going on.
