Ventura — College of the Canyons women’s golf took part in the two-day, season-opening South Coast Classic on August 27-28, with the Cougars finishing third in the field of 10 schools.

Canyons, which registered a two-day score of 655 (330/325), also placed second in the first Western State Conference tournament of the season, as Monday’s round at Buenaventura Golf Course also counted toward the conference standings.

However, the Cougars got things started on Sunday with a five-player score of 330 at Olivas Links Golf Course.

COC freshman Joanna Roecker carded a first round score of 77 to lead the way, and followed that up with another 77-stroke effort on day two.

Freshman Gina Chung’s score of 157 (80/77) ranked second for Canyons, followed by freshman Cassandra Lee at 162 (84/78).

Adelrina Kim (89/95) and Stephanie Blin (91/93) rounded out the COC top-five with identical scores of 184.

Canyons trailed Sierra College (600) and Santa Barbara City College (622) in the tournament standings. College of the Desert (676) finished fourth and Moorpark College (681) was fifth.

In the WSC portion of the event, SBCC took first place (300), followed by COC(325) and Moorpark (330).

The Cougars will next play at WSC Santa Barbara at Santa Barbara Golf Club on Monday, September 11. That event is scheduled to tee off at 10:30 a.m.
