The CSUN men’s soccer team has a pair of matches coming up on the docket this week.
The Matadors (3-2) host their final home non-conference match Thursday night when San José State arrives in Northridge. Kickoff on the CSUN Sports Network is set for 7 p.m. Thursday is Youth Soccer Night at Matador Soccer Field. Youth under 13 receive free admission when wearing team jersey or t-shirt.
With 16 newcomers on the roster, San José State is 2-2 entering this week’s match. Jeremy Romero scored two of his team-leading three goals in the Spartans 2-0 victory over Saint Mary’s last Thursday night. Andy Rios has tallied the other two goals for SJSU this season. This is the first time since the 2010 season in which the Matadors and the Spartans are facing each other on the pitch. San José State leads the all-time series 8-4-1.
The Matadors return to the road Sunday night when CSUN travels to Grand Canyon for a 7 p.m. match. Sunday’s match will be streamed by the WAC Digital Network (wacsports.com/watch).
Grand Canyon is eligible this season for the NCAA Division I Tournament after the four-year transition from the Division II ranks was completed this past Summer. The ‘Lopes are 1-4 to start this week after losing 2-1 to No. 23 Pacific last Sunday. GCU hosts UC Riverside Thursday night before welcoming CSUN to Phoenix.
The ‘Lopes are led by Niki Jackson. Jackson was named to the preseason Mac Hermann Trophy Watch list after being named 2016 WAC Offensive Player of the Year (16 goals). He currently paces Grand Canyon with three goals and seven points. This is the first meeting between the Matadors and GCU.
CSUN went 1-1 last week at New Mexico’s Grange & Ashwill Invitational. The Matadors dropped a 2-1 decision to the host Lobos before defeating No. 9 Denver 2-0 last Sunday. Emmanuel Usen, Jr. scored both goals against the Pioneers.
CSUN goalkeeper Henrik Regitnig secured his second straight Big West Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week honor Monday. One week after earning the award thanks to a five-save performance against No. 14 Utah Valley, Regitnig provided another stalwart performance in net against No. 9 Denver.
Regitnig stopped a season-high six Denver shots. CSUN was outshot 19-10 against the Pioneers, but Regitnig was up to the challenge. He also made two saves in a 2-1 defeat to the host Lobos. Regitnig earned a selection on the All-Tournament team.
