Former Canyon Cowboys head coach Chris Varner has been named as the new color commentator for SCVTV’s telecasts of high school football. Varner takes over for Tony Moskal, who has moved on to other sportscasting opportunities.
For the last four years, Varner established a 21-22 record at Canyon, including two playoff appearances. He took over from Harry Welch who left to coach at St. Margaret’s in Orange County following the Cowboys’ state champion season.
Before that, Varner, a former member of the 101st Airborne Division of the U.S. Army, handled the Cowboys’ JV squad.
“Chris knows high school football and he knows the Foothill League,” said SCVTV Sports Director Dave Caldwell, who handles play-by-play.
“He brings a passion for the game that viewers I’m sure will enjoy,” Caldwell said. “I look forward to a great season of high school football working with Chris.”
SCVTV will kick off the 2011 high school football season Friday, Sept. 2, as the West Ranch Wildcats host the Nordhoff Rangers in a non-league game at Valencia High School at 7 p.m.
