SAN FRANCISCO — USC beach volleyball junior Nicolette Martin (Anaheim, Calif./Canyon HS) and sophomores Jenna Belton (Aptos, Calif./Aptos HS) and Jo Kremer (Pacific Palisades, Calif./Harvard-Westlake HS) were each named to the inaugural Pac-12 Beach Volleyball All-Academic teams on Thursday, May 26. Junior Sophie Bukovec (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Bishop Allen Academy) received honorable mention status.
Among the 20 student-athletes named to the first-ever all-academic beach volleyball teams, Martin was named to the first team with a 3.60 grade-point average in fine arts. Belton and Kremer were each chosen to the second team. The two USC sophomores hold 3.50 GPAs and are undeclared in their field of study. Bukovec has a 3.08 in sociology. Washington senior Justice Magraw was named the sport’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
To be eligible for selection to the All-Academic Teams, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average, be either a starter or significant contributor, and have a minimum of one year of enrollment at their institution.
Martin paired exclusively with fellow junior Allie Wheeler and finished with a 36-5 overall record and a 31-4 mark at the No. 3 position in duals. The tandem won the Hawai’i Invitational silver title and finished as the runner up in the USAV Beach Collegiate Challenge silver bracket. Martin and Wheeler had winning streaks of 17 and nine matches during the season and provided the Women of Troy with the clinching point in eight duals.
Belton played primarily with freshman Abril Bustamante at the fourth court in duals and finished the season with a 28-8 overall record and a 26-6 mark in duals. The duo lost to Martin and Wheeler in the Hawai’i Invitational silver final. Kremer partnered with senior Zoe Nightingale at the No. 5 spot in duals and finished the year with a 32-6 overall record and a 25-6 mark in duals. The tandem finished the season on a 17-match winning streak and was named to the NCAA Championships’ All-Tournament Team.
Bukovec was named an All-American and was a member of the Pac-12 All-Conference team. She paired with senior Alexa Strange and finished with a 33-9 overall record with a 25-6 record in duals. They won 18 of their last 19 matches at the No. 2 position and were chosen as the Pac-12 Pair of the Week on April 18.
The top-ranked Trojans finished with a 34-2 record and secured the inaugural Pac-12 championship and the sport’s first-ever NCAA crown. The Women of Troy completed a 30-matche winning streak and defeated Florida State, 3-0, in the first NCAA title match to cement themselves as the first-ever back-to-back collegiate beach volleyball national champions. Head coach Anna Collier became the first head coach to reach the 100-win mark and is now 108-17 in five seasons at Troy for a .864 winning percentage.
