The Master’s College Golf program is proud to announce the signing of Joseph Downey from Newhall.
“I chose The Master’s College because of the God-based curriculum,” said Downey. “The guys on the golf team are cool and Coach Semelsberger is a really nice guy and a godly man whom we can look up to.”
In his time at West Ranch High School, Downey earned 2013 All-Santa Clarita Valley Boys Golfer of the Year honors, was named as the 2013 Foothill League MVP, and was the individual champion of the 2013 Newhall Cup. Also, Downey was a 2012 and 2013 Player’s Choice Award selection, and was a part of West Ranch’s historic six consecutive Foothill League championship streak.
Downey enters The Master’s College with two goals: honor God with everything he does, and help the golf team win a national championship.
Seventh-year Head Coach Jason Semelsberger believes both of Downey’s goals are attainable.
“Joey is one of those young men where you see the joy of Christ in him immediately, and his positive attitude is infectious,” said Semelsberger. “I anticipate he will be very comfortable adjusting to his new surroundings here at TMC. He is well supported by a family who is committed to God, as well.”
Downey plans to pursue a degree in Business Administration for a career in accounting.
At the end of their 2012-13 campaign, the Mustangs finished first in the Cascade/Golden State Conference and received a No. 14 national ranking.
An optimistic outlook is appropriate for 2013-14 as the squad is returning four upperclassmen and has signed two key additions in the offseason.
