The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is expanding its S.H.A.R.E. Program in an effort to reduce reports of hate crimes and hate incidents throughout the county.
An anti-hate, tolerance-based, countywide community engagement program launched in 2008 by LASD deputies, S.H.A.R.E. was originally designed to address high school 9th graders as they began facing the challenges of a complex, and sometimes confusing, social structure on a new school campus.
S.H.A.R.E. went on hiatus a couple years ago when the administrator retired. After receiving input from various school campuses requesting it engage with groups of all ages, the program relaunched in June of 2017.
S.H.A.R.E. is now expanding its audience to include kindergarten, elementary and junior high schools in addition to the high schools. Although many of the school staff members attend the students’ presentation, they are adding a pre-visit presentation for the staff.
The program incorporates various innovative methods to facilitate communication and understanding. A powerful audio-visual experience is used to illuminate audiences and prompt informed discussion. They travel to schools, businesses and other community gatherings where they host presentations of anti-hate and tolerance, which include the S.H.A.R.E. Program trailer.
Videos of powerful testimony from real victims of hate crimes are shared with the audience. After the testimonies, they engage the audience in a dynamic high-energy dialogue. Allowing the audience to exchange ideas and express their personal revelations and solutions uncovered by the material.
The host then brings home the topic with a gripping personal story which relates to the anti-hate, anti-bullying testimony to create that ‘aha moment.’
