2000 - Movie stuntman Richard Farnsworth, 2000 Newhall Walk of Western Stars inductee, and Dr. Robert Rockwell, first COC president, die on the same day [Farnsworth story] [Rockwell story]
Farnsworth-Rockwell

A man in a dark green Audi convertible reportedly attempted to kidnap a young girl near Soledad Canyon Road and Shangri La Drive in Canyon Country Tuesday morning.

The ninth grader was walking to school around 7 a.m. when a Caucasian man in his 30s with reddish blonde hair approached her, according to Shirley Miller, public information officer for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

The man slowed down and shouted for her to, “Get in the car.” The student started yelling at him, creating a commotion which caused the suspect to drive off.

As the vehicle fled, the quick-thinking teenager took her cell phone out and began recording the vehicle.

A statement was issued to parents by the William S. Hart Union High School District states the following: “Dear parents, we want to alert you to a situation that occurred this morning before school. A high school student was walking to school when a man described as being in his mid-30s with brown hair and driving a dark green Audi convertible, pulled up alongside of the girl and told her to get in. Luckily, our student had the wherewithal to say no, yell and made enough of a commotion to make the man quickly drive away. Deputies from the SCV Sheriff’s Station were made aware of the incident immediately and they are investigating the matter vigorously.

We want to applaud the way this young lady proactively took control of the situation and hope that it can be an example to other families. This is an opportunity to talk to your kids about what to do in these situations. Don’t fall silent, walk in pairs or groups and always be safe.”

If you have any additional information about this incident, or the identification of this suspect, please call the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station at 661-255-1121 or submit anonymous tips through www.LACrimestoppers.org.
