The annual Hart Games return to Valencia High School on Monday, March 16, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Valencia High School. Opening ceremonies begin at 10 a.m. Admission is free.
Approximately 350 special education students from 11 schools in the William S. Hart Union School District will step onto the track to compete in the districtwide Special Education track and field meet.
The event is sponsored and organized by the Hart District’s Adapted Physical Education Department and for many of these students, it is the highlight of their year, said Hart Games organizers.
The Hart Games are the culmination of months of preparation during a track and field unit in physical education. Students practice running, throwing, jumping and cheering each other on.
“What makes the Hart Games so special is that, for a few beautiful hours, the stadium belongs entirely to these students. They are the center of attention in an arena typically reserved for the fastest, the strongest, the most naturally athletic. On this day, the spotlight shines on perseverance, courage, teamwork and heart,” said Patti Miller, Hart Games Director. “Many of our athletes face significant challenges just to participate. Some navigate mobility differences. Others push through sensory, communication, or medical needs that most of us never see. Getting to that starting line is, in itself, an accomplishment. Crossing the finish line is a triumph.”
The public is invited to bring your children, bring your parents, bring your neighbors. Stand in the bleachers. Cheer loudly. Watch the opening ceremonies.
