LOS ANGELES — USC women’s lacrosse junior attacker Michaela Michael was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Offensive Player of the Week and sophomore midfielder Lydia Sutton was chosen for MPSF Defensive Player of the Week honors for the week of Feb. 29-Mar. 6. Oregon’s freshman attacker Shannon Williams received the league’s Rookie of the Week award.
Michael’s award is her second this season and the fourth MPSF weekly award of her career. She was also chosen for the offensive player of the week honor in 2015 and was named rookie of the week once in 2014. Sutton takes home her first-career MPSF weekly honor. The two awards marks the third time that USC has won multiple awards in the same week. The other two occurred in 2015 (Feb. 9 and March 16). Women of Troy have won MPSF weekly honors 16 times in program history with six offensive awards, five defensive awards, and five rookie of the week honorees.
Michael (Hillsborough, Calif./The Menlo School) scored 10 goals, grabbed eight draw controls, caused two turnovers, and finished with a ground ball and an assist for the Trojans this week. She went 5-for-6 from the eight-meter arc and posted the 16th and 17th hat trick games of her career. Michael scored five goals each in wins over Michigan (13-4) and Vermont (18-7) to mark the eighth and ninth times in her career that she has had five goals or more in the same game. Michael scored her 10 goals on just 14 shots and finished with a .786 shots-on-goal percentage. She became just the third Trojan to score 100 goals in her career and now has 106; tied for second in school history.
Sutton (Minnetonka, Minn./The Blake School) was a disruptive force for the Women of Troy as she racked up seven caused turnovers and picked up seven ground balls. In USC’s wins over Michigan (13-4) and Vermont (18-7), Sutton helped the Trojan defense hold opponents to a paltry 15-for-29 rate on clear attempts. She also contributed to USC’s 18-goal outburst with a goal of her own against the Catamounts to go with career marks with five caused turnovers and ground balls in the game.
The 12th-ranked Women of Troy (4-0) wrap up a season-opening stretch of five games in Southern California when No. 10 Stony Brook visits McAlister Field on Monday, Mar. 14, for a 3 p.m. PT game.
