Bringing Civil War history to life is a longstanding tradition at Placerita Junior High School in Newhall.
Members of the 5th New York Civil War Volunteer Infantry demonstrated marching and firing techniques from the Civil War for students Friday.
Eighth-graders at Placerita Junior High School enjoyed the school’s annual tradition of a Civil War Day, said Cynthia Ross, one of the teacher-organizers.
“This has been a Placerita (Junior High School) tradition for a long time,” Ross said. “It brings the field trip to them. I enjoyed this when I was a student, and now enjoy experiencing it with my students.”
Actors portraying soldiers from both the North and South sides of the conflict described their views about the war for students.
Women from the North and South described how they helped the men during the war by making blankets, canning food and, ultimately, starting the American Red Cross.
The actors also told stories of women sneaking into the armies dressed as men.
