Brent D. Zubek, the chief suspect in a gruesome double homicide in Chatsworth, was captured today at 4:30 a.m. in Encino, an LAPD spokesman confirmed.

Zubek, 43, is a former Valencia resident who worked as a mechanic on Ruether Avenue in Canyon Country.

Zubek had been on the run from police ever LAPD Devonshire Division detectives found the bodies of a couple in a dumpster in the 20400 block of Lassen Street in Chatsworth. They had been decomposing for four to six weeks.

LAPD spokesman Gregory Baek said Zubek had been under surveillance for an unknown amount of time by the investigating officer when he was cornered in Encino.

Early Monday, Zubek engaged LAPD SWAT team members in a firefight from an Encino rooftop. Baek said Zubek was shot in the hip and hospitalized.

Also Monday morning, fire was set to the house where the murders are believed to have occurred. Baek said the Los Angeles Fire Department is handling the arson investigation.

A convicted felon, Zubek pleaded guilty in 1993 to a string of bank robberies in Los Angeles and San Diego counties. Zubek and his partners Roderick Scott Russell and Jonathan David Henderson, both of Canyon Country, were dubbed the “Hole in the Wall Gang” because they would drill their way into banks before dawn and lie in wait for employees to arrive.

At the time, Zubek operated an automotive repair service at Ruether Avenue and Soledad Canyon Road, and he  lived in the Park Sierra Apartments before moving to the Shadow Pines area, a source familiar with the story told SCVNEWS.com.

According to public records, addresses for Zubek include an apartment complex in the 24400 block of Valencia Boulevard between McBean Parkway and Rockefeller; and addresses in the 27300 block of Rock Rose Lane and the 20700 block of Soledad Canyon Road in Canyon Country. He worked in the 26800 block of Ruether Avenue.
