wrhs-logoThe West Ranch baseball team was locked in a tight game with Golden Valley before exploding in the fifth inning.

The Wildcats scored seven runs in the fifth en route to an 8-1 win over the Grizzlies.

The score was tied 1-1 before West Ranch sent 11 batters to the plate in the fifth inning. Jake Bird knocked in three runs with a two-out triple. Tyler Woldanski knocked in two runs with a double in the inning.

West Ranch improved to 7-3 to stay in first place in the Foothill League standings.

The Canyon baseball team rallied for six runs in the seventh inning in its 6-4 win over Saugus.

Two runs scored on a two-out, bases-loaded single by Canyon’s Chris Serrano in the seventh inning. Micah Moyle added an insurance RBI single to give the Cowboys a two-run lead.

Canyon is tied for first place with West Ranch at 7-3 in Foothill League play.

The Hart baseball team beat Valencia in dramatic fashion. Austin Russ hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning in Hart’s 4-3 win over the Vikings.

In high school golf, West Ranch won the Newhall Cup by 30 strokes over Hart at the TPC at Valencia. West Ranch also won its sixth Foothill League championship in a row.

Joey Downer from West Ranch won the Foothill League MVP by winning the two-day Newhall Cup tournament. He was 4-over 76 on Wednesday and beat Hart’s Glen Lee by five strokes.

In hockey, the Kings lost to the Detroit Red Wings, 3-1. Kyle Clifford scored his sixth goal of the season in the second period. But the Red Wings scored two goals in the third period to win the game.

In the NBA, the Lakers lost to the San Antonio Spurs, 102-91, in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs. The Lakers are down, two games to none. Game 3 is at Staples Center on Friday night.

In baseball, the Dodgers lost to the New York Mets, 7-3, and wasted Ted Lilly’s masterful first start of the season. Lilly gave up one run on six hits and struck out seven in five innings.

But Jordany Valdepsin hit a grand slam in the 10th inning to win the game for the Mets.

The Dodgers and the Mets conclude their three-game series today in New York.
