The weekend wrap-up in sports around the Santa Clarita Valley…
Santa Clarita High School Football
Oh, how fickle momentum in sports can be. What looked like a two-horse race in the Foothill League just eleven days ago has turned in to what is sure to be thrilling finish to the season.
Four teams are alive and fighting for playoff spots heading into the final game of the Foothill League season. The potential for a 3-way split championship between Valencia, Saugus and Hart is also in play.
The *KHTS Game of the Week* took place at Cougar Stadium Friday night pitting Hart as the road team against Saugus, and with Indians’ QB Nick Moore lost for the season to an ACL tear as well as RB Nelson James ineffective due to a thigh injury, it was the Louis Eusebi Show.
Centurions’ senior quarterback accounted for all 24 points in a 24-0 blanking of Hart. Yes, all 24 points — three rushing touchdowns, each PAT, and a 40 yard field goal for good measure.
With the huge victory Saugus improves to 3-1 in the Foothill League and jumps ahead of Hart for 2nd place, due to the tie-breaking win.
Hart (3-1) is in the thick of a gut-wrenching stretch run. For a team that entered last week ranked sixth in the division, they looked anything but it without the (previously) top two candidates for league MVP in Moore and James.
From the most explosive offense in the Foothill League to shutout by Saugus for the first time in over a decade.
Business as usual for the Valencia Vikings (4-0) in the Foothill League, cementing themselves as the class of the Santa Clarita Valley for the seventh straight season. With Hart’s loss to Saugus and their ho-hum 42-3 dismantling of Canyon (0-4) Friday night, the Vikings are guaranteed at least a share of the Foothill League championship.
For the seventh year in a row.
A remarkable feat for a team that seemed listless through the non-league portion of the schedule. Four weeks later and there is a completely different feel for the Vikings, who are averaging 36 points per game and have only surrendered 19 total points in the Foothill League.
Not 19 points per game, 19 total for a little under 5 points a game, led by a ferocious pass rush. Taylor Manuel and Jermaine Brown put their talents on full display against the Cowboys, combining for six of the Vikings’ seven sacks.
There weren’t any competitive games this week, and in years past for the Golden Valley Grizzlies (2-2) that usually meant they were on the wrong side of a beatdown. Not the 2015 Grizzlies, who are doling out their own powerful victories this year, and continuing to make history.
Golden Valley doubled its Foothill League victory total with a 35-0 shutout of West Ranch (1-3) on Friday, further providing evidence to the new and improved Grizzlies.
With a legitimately nasty defense and tailback Jesse Camacho established as one of the premiere offensive players in the league this season, this team has its sights set on another school first: a trip to the CIF-SS West Valley Division playoffs.
Santa Clarita Christian’s season has taken a disappointing turn after back-to-back losses in the San Joaquin League leave the Cardinals (6-3) on the outside looking in at the playoff picture.
The Cards could not keep up in a shootout with East Valley Division No. 2 Saddleback Valley Christian, falling 62-25. Junior running back Luke Orona was the lone bright spot in the loss, rushing for 94 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries.
COC Football
It was a wild one at Cougar Stadium Saturday between the Cougars (6-2) and Pirates of Ventura. Canyons held a 48-41 lead in the fourth quarter but yielded the last 13 points of the game, losing 48-54.
Passing offense was on display, with both quarterbacks going for well over 450+ yards. Valencia’s own Nick Jones had a monster game with 11 catches and 186 yards.
2015 World Series
Congratulations to the Kansas City Royals for winning the World Series over the weekend in five games against the New York Mets.
