A former Malibu-Lost Hills sheriff’s deputy who lives in Saugus was sentenced Tuesady to 400 hours of community service for his role in receiving bribes in exchange for fixing traffic tickets, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.
Edwin Allan Tamayo, 43, of Haskell Canyon, also was sentenced to three years formal probation and ordered to resign from the Sheriff’s Department by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Robert Vanderet.
Tamayo pleaded no contest in September to one count of conspiracy to obstruct justice. The former deputy, who was assigned to the Lost Hills Station before resigning on Aug. 14, managed to fix tickets by removing them before they were filed in court and took court notices from a colleague’s office mailbox without the deputy’s knowledge.
He was compensated by friends or acquaintances for his covert actions on at least two occasions. In one instance, Tamayo was paid at least $1,000 by a driver to get rid of three tickets in 2012.
Deputy District Attorney Deborah Delport of the Justice System Integrity Division prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Internal Criminal Investigations Bureau.
