Ashlee this isn’t about the money this is about getting the attention of the city after repeatedly neglecting to make that intersection and crossing area a safer one. A mother lost her son and I’m sure she gets to read that comment, imagine how she would feel.
Although, with that being said I’m sure it isn’t a cheap expense to have to bury your young son unexpectedly.

Your points still leave my opinion the same. The boy didn’t die because the road was messed up. The boy didn’t die because of Edison. The boy died because some old man drove through a red light. So, because it’s expensive to burry someone, and because someone needs to deal with the emotional side of loosing someone, doesn’t mean you need to sue everyone.
Slowing down the speed limit for that road, fixing the road, adding more lights. Whatever it may be, won’t stop people from running red lights.
You can’t say that with 100% certainty. Doing those things could help even maybe ONE person not running a red light there and saving a life and to me, as I’m sure it is to the mother, that’s enough to want them to do something about it. Your opinion can remain whatever you’d like it to be.

It doesn’t matter how “safe” an intersection is when a driver runs a red light. Are we really gonna blame the road for something a negligent driver did?
He’s named in the suit as well, but the speed of that road does need to be changed. My kids do to school near that area, and people fly down that street all the time. Problem is no one wants to take responsibility for there actions.
I can see you have the best intentions, but if the posted speed-limit didn’t prevent this tragedy, who’s to say it’s going to prevent any future incidents? People ignore the signs every day. That’s not the city’s fault, that’s the ignorance of the drivers around you.

Well one thing is the yellow light (before the red) was on sometimes for only a sec. and other times longer and that’s a problem! Not consistent and dangerous.
Thousands of people drive and cross through that intersection every day and come out the other side perfectly fine…..causing an uprising over 1 tragic event and going crazy with lawsuits won’t heal anyone or prevent this from happening again.
This isn’t the first incident. Josh Fulbright died there too he was 14. That intersection is extremely scary for pedestrians. I have walked that way with my children to go to the park many times. There are things that could be done to make it safer. Efficiency for drivers shouldn’t be the priority at this intersection. If drivers have to wait a little longer than so be it. My opinion… Don’t comment on how rediculous this is unless you have been a pedestrian in THIS particular intersection. i support the family in taking action… Unfortunately this is the only type of action that makes the city listen. They won’t want to fork over money again and they will address the issue. It’s unfortunate … But it’s the way things work.
It isn’t just one tragedy though, this has happened before. And plenty of accidents occur in this intersection as well.

Changing the speed limit will just lead to people speeding and still running red lights. Unfortunately the road has NOTHING to do with this and EVERYTHING to do with people’s inability to pay attention.

There’s nothing extraordinarily special about that intersection that makes it unsafe , especially if somebody knows how to pay attention and drive. I’ve driven down that street thousands of times over decades of living here. You’ve got a good heart, but you need to look at this situation logically. This is a tragedy that’s no one’s fault but the driver. Nobody should have to deal with the loss of a child but a lawsuit is not the way to deal with it. Maybe Mrs. Savaikie could turn this around by speaking to the new drivers at local high schools regarding the importance of safe driving.

Zita hun, my goodness… It takes longer for someone to slow down (be a teen or an older man) in a 55mph zone. Many people drive even faster and try to make the yellow or think it’s okay to go above the law. If the speed limit is lowered it gives people more of a chance to slow down and higher fines to those who do not follow the rules. In the san fernando valley the speed limit is 35 in most places. It’s really common sense to those with families.

My understanding is that the mother is trying to get the speed limits lowered throughout Santa Clarita to a survivable speed in the event of a vehicle versus pedestrian accident. That would be something like 25mph. Can you imagine driving from one side of Santa Clarita to the other at 25mph?
Sadly there are always going to be inattentive drivers. The only person to blame is the driver not paying attention and blowing through the red light. Maybe her focus should be on increasing fines and penalties for red light runners and pushing for mandatory jail time for anyone that injures and/or kills someone because they ran a red light.

Fining someone for going through a red light and hitting someone doesn’t sound like an adequate solution to me. Santa Clarita has one of the highest speed limits I have seen. It’s not unreasonable for a community filled with kids to have things safer for our youngest generation.
Actually, I suggested mandatory jail time for anyone who runs a red light and injures or kills someone. I’m okay with the speed limits in Santa Clarita and don’t think they need to be lowered, and I live very close to a street where the speed limit is 50mph. Lowering the speed limit isn’t going to stop inattentive drivers from running red lights.

I don’t know if you have children or if you travel by foot, but I do, as well as by car… I am ok with leaving a little earlier if it means it makes the streets safer for pedestrians. I am actually a member of that family. I was just a child at the time, but I can’t help but think that had our family done something… Maybe this wouldn’t have happened. While I don’t think suing is the answer to everything, I do believe this intersection is particularly dangerous and if this is what it takes to get the city to do something about it… I wouldn’t fault them for perusing it. The courts will decide if there is merit.

When I was 19 years old my husband my daughter 2 years old and I we’re sleeping on top of a houseboat that night the water at the lake was lowered causing the houseboat to flip over our daughter drowned wood suing the agency that lowered the lake bring my daughter back would all the money in the world bring her back no my opinion don’t sue. The family’s loss is tragic the driver was at fault.
She missed one, she should have sued the car company whom the driver was using then her collection is now complete.

They are looking for nuisance settlements from all of them. Hoping that each entity offers up a “cost of defense” offer to avoid expensive and protracted litigation. They are angry, rightfully so, but 2 wrongs do not make a right. They are suing for blood money…

The agencies were named in the lawsuit because that’s where the money is and for no other reason. This family has clearly suffered a tragic loss, and just as clearly the primary cause of that loss is the driver of the vehicle that hit the boy. Undoubtedly that driver does not have the kind of money that is being sought. If an agency is found to be even 1% at fault, the plaintiff can collect 100% of the damages from the agency instead. Although these agencies have insurance policy’s for these kind of things the cost will pushed onto you and me. No money will bring their preciuos son back. It’s a lose lose situation!!!!

My heart goes out to this family. Nothing would be easier than to just forget about it but when it’s your child you can’t just forget about it. If you have ever driven at the intersection where their son was killed you would understand that it is a blind intersection and it is understandable why cars blow that red light. This is not a one-time incident it has happened there before. This family is doing what they can to prevent this from happening to another family. This has to be very painful for the family because it keeps this catastrophe alive but it seems as though they are doing it for the benefit of the community. I’m appalled at the lack of empathy and compassion by the people posting here. Are people that cynical now that they assume everyone has an agenda?

I drive that intersection every day of my life. The only direction it is blind from is going down bouquet to the park. Which is why there is a traffic light to the high upper left so you know what the light is before you actually see the intersection. Just like all the blind intersection here. There is nothing that could have prevented this and it was pure driver negligence. End of story
No not end of story, especially for the family that lost their child. There are trees obstructing the view of the traffic light as you approach. If you are not familiar with the area you can miss the light. Proof is in how many accidents there have been at that intersection. There is accountability of the driver first and foremost but the city needs to clean up the safety of that intersection. Its what we already pay for!

I read the article, it didn’t state anything about the actual lawsuit other than the emotional distress the family has faced because of the defendants negligence. Southern California Edison is included because of the location of the light which I don’t see how that’s their fault the road curves to an intersection. I have personally driven that road and you must be vigil. I’m not going to pretend that I know all the laws etc as I’m not an attorney. Nor will I say I have complete knowledge of how suing the city, state and everyone else works. However I’m inclined to believe that this is some way will affect the tax payers. I tried to google how the process works to gain some knowledge but all I could find was that. If the families main agenda is to make that intersection safer isn’t there another way to go about it than bringing a lawsuit to the city that would seem to affect us the taxpayers? The article does seem like their main agenda is compensation for their emotional distress and loss.

We will never have perfectly safe streets…it would simply be too expensive to do so. However, I would be more sympathetic to the family if they were suing to make roads safer, not to line their own pockets. To the contrary, emptying the bank accounts of the city and others who have control over our roads and safety will only make things less safe for the rest of us. I smell a greedy attorney and family behind this.
People the problem with this intersection is that left turn coming off of seco into Bouquet, vs. pedestrians in either crosswalk. The traffic patterns are different at this light and it becomes confusing for both drivers and pedestrians. Children, are children, and where an adult would be more vigilant in realizing that this is an unusual traffic light, a child would just go about business as usual. There is no room for error at the crossing. I have had drivers in that left turn lane pull out while I was walking with my children and stop right next to the crosswalk waiting for us to cross. This is scary and unacceptable. This light is swarming with children pedestrians all the time because of the close proximity to the schools and 7-11, thrifties etc. this needs to be changed to make it safe for pedestrian travel. That is a wide street to cross and it takes time on foot. There needs to be a delay between the left turn and pedestrian crossing or big flashing signs with instructions, like unsafe to cross. I am not an engineer, but the city could come up with SOMETHING to make it safer. I can’t speak for this young mans family or their intentions as I don’t know them personally. But I can speak for myself and the fact that my step brother also died at this very intersection, and that I have witnessed several accidents and have seen many people with my own eyes travel through that turn section and crosswalk in an unsafe way probably without even realizing it. This needs to change, and or it needs to have flashing postings that children and adults that are unfamiliar with this sections patterns cannot ignore. something should be done, this isn’t your average intersection. Sometimes the timing is different for the left turn signal and I think it has to do with the pedestrian walk button. If it has or hasn’t been pushed. It’s not really clear – and there in lies the issue. I commend the family for taking action. Hopefully it opens the cities eyes to an issue that has been ongoing for decades. They need to find a solution that works. When it’s a reasonably safe intersection again, there is still a possibility that someone will do something dumb and hit someone….thats a sad truth, but that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t try to address the REAL SAFETY ISSUES with this light. Say what you will, argue what you will, but THIS LIGHT IS EXTREMELY UNSAFE!!!!! Let’s stop bickering and accept that fact and let everyone move on…. Hats off to this family, I hope you get something done.

Is there such a thing as Safe intersection with the way people drive? People will not slow down, people continue to text and talk on cell phones.
Look at all the high school kids that are killed including the two most recent ones despite having every high school in the valley participate in “every 15 minutes”. The sad reality is this was a very tragic accident. No amount of money will bring this child back, no amount of money will heal the loss. But there is an amount of money that makes attorneys feel much better, and that only comes from naming every possible deep pocket you can list and hope and pray for a large settlement. This family had to have been bullied into that law suit because it was at a very weak time of their life and it will only extend the healing time. May God bless everyone involved and may broken hearts be healed.

Is the Green Brier sign responsible for killing the driver who crashed into it on Soledad ? Should they have made it out of cardboard instead of rack and cement ?
They will assign a percentage of the blame, no matter how small, to Edison or the city, say 1%, and that will be worth a couple million dollars of our tax money. They should blame the parents for not teaching their kid to look at the cars, not just the green lights. I’m sure he had the right of way but had he been taught to actually look and see that’s it’s safe to cross the outcome would be different. Why would you not look as you cross ?
