It is my pleasure to share with you some of the things happening in our community this month.
On Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 6:45 p.m., the City of Santa Clarita will host the annual Evening of Remembrance and Walk event. The Evening of Remembrance is held at the Youth Grove at Central Park to remember Santa Clarita Valley youth who lost their lives in auto-related incidents.
The city and its Blue Ribbon Task Force created the Youth Grove for the Santa Clarita community – particularly our youth – to use and to reflect upon the unfortunate consequences of drinking and driving, and reckless driving. The goal is that through this graphic and powerful reminder, our citizens will vow to be more mindful and responsible when getting behind the wheel. More information on the event and the Youth Grove is available via the city’s website at www.santa-clarita.com/blueribbon.
On Saturday, Sept. 17, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., the city will host the 22nd annual River Rally. This is a great opportunity for volunteers to help clean a portion of the Santa Clara River – the longest free-flowing river and one of the last two natural river systems remaining in Southern California. You can be a part of the solution for a better environment by helping to preserve the river’s natural beauty and variety of wildlife.
As part of the event, we also offer a free Environmental Expo to learn about recycling, air quality, pollution prevention, water quality, open space preservation, wildlife conservation and much more. It is an excellent volunteer opportunity for scout troops, youth groups, and the entire family.
For more information, including this year’s location, call the River Rally Hotline at 661-284-1415 or visit GreenSantaClarita.com.
In Old Town Newhall, the city’s popular Thursdays @Newhall events continue with a series of regular Thursday evening events held weekly on Main Street. Jam Sessions, 10 by 10, Revved Up and the popular Senses Block Party provide a free entertainment venue in the heart of Old Town Newhall. For a complete schedule, visit www.OldTownNewhall.com.
I appreciate your interest and engagement in our community. Please feel free to email me directly at bkellar@santa-clarita.com.
Bob Kellar is mayor of the city of Santa Clarita.
