The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a motion Tuesday by Mayor Michael D. Antonovich calling on the state to fast-track the approval process for hospitals, police and fire stations, schools and other public and nonprofit buildings.
“The State Legislature has the same responsibility to permit those projects that provide vital public services and non-profit capital projects in the County of Los Angeles that serve the public interest – as they did for a football stadium,” Antonovich said in his motion.
Antonovich noted that the Legislature approved a bill that waived some of the environmental review processes for a planned football stadium and convention center project in downtown Los Angeles.
“Hospitals, law enforcement, libraries, schools and other public and non-profit entities provide essential services and should not be exposed to harsher costly regulations than a sports venue,” Antonovich said.
The motion was largely symbolic inasmuch as the county cannot bind the state to act.
