A public hearing to establish the new trustee area voting plan for the Saugus Union School District will be held Tuesday, Feb. 23.
A hearing conducted by the Los Angeles County Committee on School District Organization will allow school district staff members to explain the process and the proposal before opening up to a public comment period. The hearing will be held at the SUSD boardroom at 6:30 p.m.
The SUSD Governing Board voted to approve the new plan in November, taking the district from an “at-large” voting system to a “by-trustee area” voting system.
The decision to move to a “by-trustee area” was made after a lawsuit was filed alleging a California Voting Rights Act violation.
The new system gives each of the five board members representation of their own geographic area within the district. Under the new system, only voters within each trustee-area the opportunity to vote for candidates who also live in that area.
Under the map approved by the school board last year, Paul De La Cerda will represent Trustee Area 1, Judy Umeck will represent Trustee Area 2, Rose Koscielny will represent Trustee Area 3, David Powell will represent Trustee Area 4 and Chris Trunkey will represent Trustee Area 5.
If approved, the new plan will be implemented during the November 2016 governing board elections.
